Taxi driver shot by masked men through car window in west Belfast

Police in Northern Ireland have appealed for information after a taxi driver was shot through the window of his car on Sunday morning.

Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said two masked men approached the taxi at about 10.30am in the Bell Steel Manor area of Dunmurry, west Belfast.

The taxi had been parked in the area.

In a statement, a PSNI detective said the driver "was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries and is described as being in a critical but stable condition.

"Our investigation is at a very early stage and we urge anyone who was in the area at the time, and who may have information, dash-cam, CCTV or doorbell footage which could assist with our enquiries, to get in touch."

Danny Baker, a Sinn Fein representative in Stormont, condemned the "reckless" shooting.

"There is no justification for guns on our streets.

"This is an extremely busy area in our community, with many local families and children passing through to visit shops, attend sports training and go about their daily lives.

"I want to extend my best wishes to the man who has been taken to hospital, and I hope that he fully recovers."
